It’s been a week since we’ve “moved” into our RV. I like to call it Leviathan because it is so big. (The bible refers to the Leviathan as a large sea creature.) The week has gone quickly but if I am honest there are some things from home that I miss. Like what you ask? Well, I miss a functioning shower in my abode. (We haven’t tried to troubleshoot our water problem yet.) I miss having comfortable seating for all 4 of us in one room. Our RV has a 2 person love seat in the living/dining/kitchen and a 3 person futon couch in the kids room. Usually two people sit on the love seat, one person sits on the 1 folding chair we brought and one person sits on a bean bag. (Thanks Bobby for those large blue beanbag chairs way back when.) While I don’t want to say it, I’m going to say it, I miss TV. Ugg, I hate to admit it. We don’t watch TV much, but on evenings like today, when we have done a 4.6 mile hike and are all tired, I wish we had TV so we could watch School of Chocolate together as we relax. (I just read that part to my family and they laughed at me, knowing I didn’t want to admit that truth. It’s OK if you laugh too.)
Lest you think I am homesick already, let me tell you about some of the things I love about living on the road in the RV.
-Everywhere I look I see the splendor of God’s handiwork! The mountains are simply stupendous. I took geology in college and so wish I remember more than I do.
-The sunrise as it comes up behind the mountains in the valley we are camping in.
-Spotting different wild animals; nothing against squirrels but javelinas are way more exciting; especially young ones.
-Today I spotted 8 white tail deer eating prickly pear cactus up on the slope beyond our RV. Later in the morning Lyla was barking and she alerted us to the fact that they had come down and were passing the RV and crossing the street. We were able to see them closer and it was exciting to see a male teen with small antlers growing.
-Hiking as a family and as a couple. Yesterday Benjamin and I climbed the slope behind us, I definitely had to push myself to keep going as parts. I was a little concerned about the decent as there was a decent about of scrambling up. While praying for safety and courage I pressed on and made it to the summit. Coming down wasn’t as challenging or as scary as I thought. (Gretchen, if you happen to read this, I thought of you and your courage for outdoor adventures was an encouragement and inspiration to me on this hike.)
-The night sky! There are thousands of stars. On Saturday we were able to attend a talk with Dr. Otten, an astronomer, who shared views from his high power telescope with us and taught us about places near and far in our galaxy, it was a highlight for all of us. The DARK NIGHT SKY is magnificent.
I could go on, but as I mentioned earlier, we did a 4.6 mile hike this afternoon and now we are reading and relaxing. Benjamin just made some fresh popcorn and I want to be able to enjoy the special treat before it’s all gone.
I had to laugh when unsaid u missed tv...TV... would too
